Charles has lived in Hampshire for over 25 years and paints Commissioned Originals to the client’s requirement mostly specialising in House portraits and Garden landscapes or scenes of special significance, although he has produced fine works on other subjects including animals and personal portraits. Along with his wife he runs a small but successful business in fine art prints both of his own general landscapes, seascapes, and village and water scenes and by publishing those of other artists.
Charles studied art in the 1960’s working mostly in oils and watercolour. He then travelled to many parts of the world within financial systems until effecting a life change in 1996 returning to his first love, painting, which until then had remained only a hobby.
His style is distinctive and the highly detailed finished paintings take on a multidimensional reality which beckon the viewer. This is achieved by first working in washes and then building up the painting in gradual layers, rather like an oil artist, but maintaining the delicacy of the medium.
His first paintings were quickly bought up and were followed by an influx of commissions which has been constant ever since. By demand, he started painting originals of local scenes from which to create and sell prints and his popularity has increased such that he now paints in, and has prints available of, Cornwall, Scotland, Hampshire and Wiltshire and other counties. He also sells the original paintings on request.
His work is hanging on all continents barring Antarctica and many patrons return for further commissions or prints. His prints and cards have been sold by such organisations as National Trust for Scotland, The Forestry Commission, Tourist Information and are available through some quality galleries and gift shops. He has twice been invited to exhibit originals at the Festival Gallery Pitlochry and at various exhibitions across southern England.
